This list of Guidelines will be important and useful to you throughout the entire school year. PLEASE KEEP THIS LIST IN THE FRONT OF YOUR ENGLISH NOTEBOOK!
High School Literature
Ø The scope and sequence of literature for North Carolina high school students allows for a literary experience that carries not only a global perspective but an opportunity to view information and literary genres and lays a foundation of critical reading and analytical writing skills. Through texts that range from essays, speeches, articles and historical documents to a novel, a play, poetry and short stories.
Ø Students analyze the use of elements of literature and nonfiction.
Ø As students develop writing skills and respond to claims, students learn to formulate arguments and use textual evidence to support their position.
Ø To hone their listening and speaking skills, students engage with a variety of media types through which they analyze and synthesize information, discuss material, create presentations, and share their work.
Ø In each English course (I-IV) students are required to study U. S. documents “of historical and literary significance” as well as one Shakespearean play.
Ø The literature selections provide a vehicle by which to teach the CCSS (Common Core State Standards) and ensure that students will have a rich and diverse understanding of literature by the end of their senior year.
English III supports all students in developing the depth of understanding and higher order skills required by the Common Core. Students break down increasingly complex readings with close reading tools, guided instructions, and robust scaffolding as they apply each of the lesson’s concepts back to its anchor text. Students build their writing and speaking skills in journal responses, discussions, frequent free response exercises, and essays or presentations, learning to communicate clearly and credibly in narrative, persuasive and explanatory styles.. At least one Shakespearean play will be included to meet Common Core NC State Standards. Throughout the course students are evaluated through a diversity of assessments specifically designed to prepare them for the content, form, and depth of the Common Core assessments.
The course is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.
